Startup & Entrepreneurial Coaching

Travis Marsh

I work with founders and future entrepreneurs who are kicking ass and taking names, and they're looking to take the next big step in their business.  If you're looking for the next level, and you realize that what's gotten you here won't get you there, then you're in the right place.

Is this you?

  • You’re a founder that is trying to grow your startup from a handful of people to a truly scalable business

  • You're startup founder that is just getting off the ground and trying to lay the framework that is going to set you up for success.

  • You're a visionary future entrepreneur that has gotten stuck making the leap you want so that you can have the impact you know you can have

People i work with

You’re the shit at what you do.  You've taken the leap to create that startup, and you're having success.  Or maybe you are currently working for someone else gaining experience but you've gotten lots of raises and recognition and you're looking at taking the leap and launching your own business.

What you’re recognizing now is that you still have a lot more to give. But what has gotten you this far doesn’t look like it’s going to get you to the next level.

You could try and do what you've done before. Work Harder. Work Longer. That’s been successful before. If that’s your solution, you don’t need me.

If you’re looking for a better way, you might be in luck. The truth is that it’s not about putting in more hours. The secret is about working smarter.  If you're saying 'that's obvious,' I agree.  We all know it's true.  Knowing what you need to do to improve your thinking is not obvious.  It’s not easy to think differently, but when you do, you’ll be spending less time strategizing AND less time executing. With a little luck, you’ll even have more motivation.

Like all my clients, you are already good at what you do. Let’s work together to figure out what you need for the next level of greatness for you and for your company.  You've made bold moves before.  Make another bold move to risk trying to move to the next level.

The skills that you needed to launch and build the company are phenomenal, but not enough to take you to the next level of growth. Let’s figure out what is blocking you and get it out of the way.

You’ve had your idea for years. Or you’ve had so many ideas you have been paralyzed to take action. Let’s get that idea from drawing board to board room so you can make the difference in the world you were meant to.

You know the cliche about following your passion. It can be useful, but it doesn’t always jive with what needs to be done today. Let’s talk about how you can follow your contribution more and more every day, and get Passion AND Results.

We all have blind spots. These can be strengths or weaknesses. An outside perspective can clarify where you’re strong and opportunities for growth. Learn how to see yourself clearly so you can leverage your strengths and make your weaknesses irrelevant.

What We can work on

It’s the lifeblood of any business.  Whether you're taking your first steps into sales or figuring out how to hire your next VP of sales, we can come up with the immediate action steps as well as the long term strategies to get you to where you want to go.

Understanding how people’s interpersonal relationships impact business, especially long term, is one of the most overlooked areas that I’ve seen new founders make.  It’s the people that are getting things done in your business, and how they interact is key to business success.

Everything else is useless if you can’t deliver on what you say you can deliver on.  Operations often appears easy on the surface.  The complexity comes from the thousands of details that you have to get right.  Thankfully systems can help save you, and we can build those systems in less time than you would expect.

Peter Drucker said Culture eats Strategy for breakfast.  That’s certainly even more true today.  If you’re really daring, we can talk about structures that make culture a result and not a cause of what you’re doing.

Knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing is probably the single most important thing there is.  What nobody tells you, though, is that it’s not a one time activity.  There’s always a deeper level, or a level that resonates with other people more.  I can help you gain clarity now and have tools to continue to gain clarity over time.

It doesn’t help to have a successful company when you’re too burnt out to appreciate life.  I’m not saying this has to be in perfect balance at all times.  Sometimes the best thing you can do is work now to support later. However, it’s important that your balance is serving you.

In today’s economy it’s important not only to get your message out to people directly, but you also need to be providing the valuable information that allows them to find you AND feel connected to what you're doing.

Time Management

All of the tools you had for time management when you were working for someone else don't stand a chance against the increased complexity of your new role.  Time Management is the art of efficiency doing what you believe will be effective.  Let's break this apart using tested methods to get your time back on track.

I’m not going to be your CPA or help you write the terms for the next round of financing.  However if you want to brainstorm on how you’re going to raise that round or what options you have, then that’s a great topic for us to discuss because if you can't pay the bills, you won't be in business for long.

"Travis helped me navigate a critical period in my business's growth. I had just begun a national partnership and was working in three different countries, about to making a leap from 150k/year to nearly 300k/year in a small period of time. Having no formal business training myself, I needed someone who could help me identify the blind spots in my path - Travis is that guy. Our sessions are rich, efficient, and organized - I leave each one have a clearer sense of exactly where I need to set my focus and when to move on to the next task. He also helped me see past my skill set so that I could bring on the right support for projects that weren't a good use of my time, but needed to get done to move the ball down the field. Travis has been an invaluable support, and I look forward to his continued partnership as my work expands and deepens."

"The conversations I have with Travis have made me significantly more effective guiding my company.   I have similar conversations about similar topics with many people, but they almost never leave me with the depth of insight that I have when I talk with Travis.  The insights have helped me improve, but more importantly, they have helped build other leaders at Momentum Machines."

Travis has a rare gift that he brings to his coaching practice and something that most crave to experience- to feel understood and without judgement. Being a coach myself and having been coached by others, I can say that Travis has a gift and I hope many others get the opportunity to reap the benefits of his coaching wisdom.

Why I Coach

This is a question that I get all the time.  I came from a really cushy and successful tech sales career where I was getting highly paid for minimal work.  Like many of you and most of my friends and colleagues, I was struggling and looking for what I was passionate about in my life for years.  Then something horrible happened in my life.  I lost 4 close friends over the span of 2 years.  That was the worst and best thing that could have happened in my life.  It gave me the motivation to find and do what I was passionate about.

For me, I realized that what I’ve always been passionate about was learning, but not just any learning.  It’s all about the learning that’s hard to get to.  It’s about the learning you don’t think you could do.  That’s why when I found coaching it was such a good fit.  It’s a way I can challenge others AND challenge myself at the same time.  That’s why it’s always such a pleasure working with entrepreneurs and founders because they know pushing will help them get to the next level.  That’s also why I work at Stanford Business school and why I’ve started a software company that’s trying to bring challenge and growth to a whole new world of people.

I wouldn’t wish the horrible events that I went through on anyone.  Instead I want to be the force and the challenge that can help you lean into what is hardest for you, and I know there is something on the other side that is worth pushing for.

Why work with Travis

First and foremost I’ve launched several successful businesses from solopreneur outfits like this coaching business to a growing tech company.  I know the challenge that you’re facing as an entrepreneur and founder and I can help you through the struggles that you face.  I’ve been in technology for more than 15 years and I’ve been in the startup scene in San Francisco Bay Area for 5 of those years.  There isn’t much that I haven’t been through personally.  I also work with the best and brightest minds in the bay area at Stanford Graduate School of Business on a weekly basis.  What I find most interesting about that work is that true leadership is never what you think it is.  True leadership is about a willingness to risk yourself so that others might take a risk.  I’m willing to take that risk and jump into this, and I hope you'll join me.

About Travis

I graduated Salutatorian in a class of over 1000 engineers from University of Florida. I knew from the time I left college I wanted to start a company.  I didn’t do it.  I didn't do it for 10 years.  It was too easy to make good money and have a good life.  It took a wake-up call in 2012 for me to realize that it was a combination of fear and a lack of a plan that was stopping me from attempting to do something more.

I was lucky enough that a mentor saw something in me I didn’t see in myself. He hand picked me to go to an intensive coaching training program and bring coaching back into the company. He recognized something in me that I didn’t recognize in myself. I realized then and there that helping people make big changes in their lives was a far better way to have the impact I wanted in the world.

I still love technology too much to give up on it, so I also have a software company that is trying to bring the ideas of coaching to the masses.

To keep me grounded and to keep my skills sharp, I also facilitate Interpersonal Dynamics for Stanford MBA’s. The students are a phenomenal bunch of motivated, mostly current or future entrepreneurs who test and challenge me every day to be better than I was yesterday.

How do the logistics work?

I work with people all over San Francisco, the Bay Area, the U.S., and the world.  If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, I find that meeting in person tends to allow for more focus and often that leads to more ideas flowing.  If you are outside of the San Francisco Bay Area or you just like the convenience of being able to get coaching that better fits into your schedule, I also do coaching via Skype and phone regularly.
